Open Source Technology Group

The Open Source Technology Group (OSTG) describes itself as a "news, collaboration and distribution community for IT and Open Source development, implementation and innovation." OSTG is supported by VA Software and dedicated to the Open Source Initiative. It is an attempt to bring together talent to create software that conforms to the GNU license model promoted by the Free Software Foundation. The former name of the OSTG was OSDN (Open Source Developer Network) until it changed its name in July 2004. The best known websites and projects in OSTG are:
  • Freshmeat: freshmeat.net
  • Geocrawler: Geocrawler.com (defunct)
  • Linux.com: Linux.com
  • LinuxGram: LinuxGram.com
  • NewsForge: NewsForge.com
  • IT Manager's Journal: itmanagersjournal.com

OSTG (then OSDN) dropped kuro5hin.org in January 2002 because the subject matter of the kuro5hin.org news site had become increasingly less about nerd stuff and increasingly more about politics, philosophy, the workplace, and other topics of a non-technical nature that many engineers dislike.
