Onyx is a census-designated place located in Kern County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 476.

Geography

Onyx is located at 35°41'16" North, 118°13'3" West (35.687683, -118.217511). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 29.9 km² (11.6 mi²). 29.9 km² (11.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 476 people, 197 households, and 128 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 15.9/km² (41.2/mi²). There are 281 housing units at an average density of 9.4/km² (24.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.49% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 1.89% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 3.78% from two or more races. 4.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 197 households out of which 22.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.92. In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 19.5% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 28.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $16,058, and the median income for a family is $29,583. Males have a median income of $31,818 versus $13,438 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $9,370. 34.7% of the population and 25.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 52.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
