One Cool Guy

One Cool Guy was a 3rd wave ska band from Union, New Jersey. Founded in 1997, by a group of Union High School musicians, the group consisted of drummer Stuart Karmatz, guitarist Keith Eberle, trumpet player Nick Afflitto, sax player Peter Sibilia, french horn player Mark Fonseca Rendeiro, and vocals from Dave Paiva and Mike Struening. In that same year, bassist Chris Pazsik joined the band, along with technician Jeff "Johnny Benitez" Pereira, and with the break up of NJ Ska band the Royalties, sax player Dan Ross was added to the line-up. The band played a fusion of punk-ska, ska-jazz, ska-core, and what many referred to as ska-rap. After the success of their 7-inch record "7 Inches of OCG" in early 1998 the band went on to release the album "From Downtown" both on the punk-ska label Pinball Records. Hits such as "Bill Kozby You", "Xample", "Be With You" and "Skank Away" were popular with high school-age teenagers who often belonged to the straight edge movement. While many of the bands lyrics supported the idea of having fun and getting crazy without the use of drugs or alcohol, only a few of the band's members were straight edge. The group broke up in September of 2000, at the height of their popularity, which included appearing on various compilations, as well as touring the eastern United States with the rock band Midtown. Despite their popularity in New Jersey, Long Island, Eastern Pennsylvania and Florida, the band remained a largely unknown force of the third wave, which had also reached its climax by late 2000. While some bands they played with, such as the Slackers, Midtown, Catch 22, New Found Glory went on to future successes, other bands such as Inspector 7, Pilfers, Toasters, King Django, Edna's Goldfish, Professor Plum, Taxicab Samurais, Foil, etc. well known in the New Jersey ska scene, would all disappear in this same period. In 2001, most of the former members collaborated with former Catch22 fontman Tom Kalnoky on the studio, post-ska project Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, an album entitled "A Call to Arms." Following this project, an even smaller group under the direction of Kalnoky got together to form the band Streetlight Manifesto and record the album "Everything Went Numb". Today the band remains in relatively loose contact, with members still largely based in the New Jersey area. Some members remain in the music business, working behind the scenes for acts such as New Found Glory and Taking Back Sunday. French horn player Mark F. Rendeiro has relocated to Amsterdam where he plays in the local jazz scene.
