On Basilisk Station

On Basilisk Station is the first Honor Harrington novel by David Weber. The plot involves Honor being assigned to a badly-designed starship and assigned to a customs patrol that is considered a less-than-respectable assignment. In addition to Honor Harrington, the story includes the first appearances of Alistair McKeon, Hamish Alexander, Lord Pavel Young, Andreas Venizelos, Rafael Cardones, Paul Tankersley, Mercedes Brigham and Allen Summervale. While on picket duty in the Basilisk star system, Honor discovers that her old enemy Lord Young is out to get her, and that more than just smuggling is going on. The People's Republic of Haven has stationed a disguised warship in the system and is inciting the primitive natives to war. They are only planning a proxy war, but Honor gets involved. Narrowly surviving a space battle, Honor and her crew manage to avoid open war. (However, see The Short Victorious War.) Novel 01
