On A Pale HorseThe first book of the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony deals with the story of a man who accidently kills death and has to take over his job and life. The series deal with the different incarnations of various powers including War, Nature and Satan. A man, Zane, is living a pathetic life without money or employment. When a magic gem merchant cheats Zane out of an opportunity for romance, this is the straw that breaks the camels back and Zane decides to take his own life, but when he sees the spectre of Death (Thanatos) advancing on him, he turns the gun and kills Death instead. He is immediately visited by a woman announcing herself to be the Incarnation of Fate, who insists that Zane must assume the position of Death. This entails residing in Purgatory and visiting Earth to collect the souls of humans who are such a delicately close balance of good and evil that they cannot determine their final destination without help. Suffering the trials and tribulations of learning the job, he eventually discovers that he was used and manipulated by a powerful magician with ties to the Incarnations of Time, Fate, War, and Nature, and, by using his influence over them, rigged Zanes fate into the office of Death for the purpose of protecting his daughter Luna, whome Zane falls inlove with, from the Incarnation of Evil (Satan). Satan wants her dead do to a prophecy which states that she will go into politics and thwart Satans attempt to take over the United States and eventually the rest of the world. To get past this barrier the magician set up, Satan exploits Zanes ingorance about his new roll in the office of Death in order to move him out of the way. Zane eventually realizes that Death is his turf and Satan cannot interfere with it. Thus giving Satan no choice but to admit defeat. Disney is working on a movie adaptation of this novel to be released in 2005, directed and acted by Jamie Foxx.
