Omega Directive

In the fictional Star Trek universe, the Omega Directive is a top secret directive aimed at accomplishing one task: Destroy any and all omega particles at all costs. The United Federation of Planets's top researchers in the field were killed in an Omega explosion; apparently, the particle is extremely unstable and attempts by the Federation to harness its power failed. A side effect of the Omega explosion is the disruption of subspace, leaving the area of space incapable of sustaining a warp field. When the Federation realized the dangers of the particle, they created a directive aimed at destroying Omega, thereby preventing any chance of Omega exploding. The directive supersedes the Prime Directive and only captains and admirals are aware of the directive. Captain Kathryn Janeway in encountered a large concentration of artificially created Omega molecules in the Delta Quadrant, created by an alien race on the brink of economic failure, who are making Omega to "give their children a chance at a future." Although Tuvok and other crewmembers kept reminding Janeway about the damage their actions would cause this society, they were successful in capturing the dangerous Omega particles, and were able to detonate them at a safe distance from the alien planet. It's interesting to note in this episode of Voyager that Seven of Nine mentions that the Borg Collective is aware of the Omega particle, and is interested in both its creation and destruction. Since Omega is extremely unstable yet infinitely harmonious, the Borg view Omega (and its possible stabilization) as "the ultimate perfection." However, they are also bound by a similar rule as the humans are, after losing a large quantity of Borg vessels (29 cubes, 600,000 drones) and subspace to Omega explosions while trying to harness the power of the substance. As such, the Borg has not experimented with Omega since then. Seven of Nine states that the Collective would go to great lengths in securing and harnessing stable Omega particles, which would in turn make the Borg an unstoppable force; it's this remark that makes Janeway decide that the aliens' Omega must be destroyed, at all costs.
