Okinawa, Okinawa

Okinawa (沖縄市; -shi) is a city located on the island of Okinawa Honto in Okinawa, Japan. Despite the name, it is neither the largest city nor the capital of the prefecture, both titles belonging to Naha. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 123,649 and the density of 2,523.45 persons per km². The total area is 49.00 km². The city was founded on April 1, 1974 with the merger of Koza (formerly Goya, Okinawa, and Goeku, Okinawa prior to that) and Misato, Okinawa.
