OilOil is a generic term for organic liquids that are not miscible with water. The name comes from Latin oleum for olive oil. Oil is frequently used to refer to petroleum – Oil is used frequently in politics and the media when referring to dependence on "foreign oil", or oil that is imported from other countries. Some scientists have claimed that oil is an abiotic substance, meaning that it's not actually a fossil fuel but instead is an inorganic substance naturally generated within the earth. However, this viewpoint is highly doubted in the current scientific atmosphere as there is little modern proof of the abiotic theory. Types of oil See also
