Nottingham Panthers

Nottingham Panthers are a British ice hockey team who play in the city of Nottingham, England. They play their home games at the National Ice Centre and have one of the largest fanbases of any club in English ice hockey. In 2004-05 they will play their second season in the Elite League. The Panthers were originally formed in 1946. The origin of the name 'Panthers' is unknown and remains 'one of the greatest mysteries of sport in Nottingham.' The club closed down in 1960 but were reformed in 1980. Until 2000 they played at Nottingham's Ice Stadium, affectionately known to Panthers fans as 'The Barn.' The Panthers moved next door to the new National Ice Centre (NIC) building at the start of the 2000-01 season. The clubs greatest rivals are the Sheffield Steelers and games between the two at the NIC are often played in front of 6,500 capacity crowds. The club's present coach is Paul Adey, who is also the clubs all time top scorer and is considered by many to be one of the greatest Panthers of all time.
