Northern Transylvania

Northern Transylvania is the part of Transylvania which was given by Germany to Hungary in the Vienna Awards of 1940. It was returned to Romania in 1947, when the Treaty of Paris defined the border between Romania and Hungary as the same as those of 1920. Most of the Northern Transylvanian Jews (about 150,000) were sent to concentration camps during the Hungarian occupation. Some of the Romanian population, in this region fleed or was expelled.
