North American InvaderThe North American Invader (not to be confused with the same name given to the Douglas A-26) was the RAF name for the A-36 ground-attack/dive-bomber version of the North American P-51 Mustang, from which it could be distinguished by the rectangular, slatted dive-brakes both above and below the wings. However, the RAF did not order any A-36's and so the Invader name was seldom used and the A-36's used by the USAAC in Italy were usually referred-to as "Mustangs" There appears to be some confusion about the various names used by the NA-73/Mustang/P-51/A-36 family. Mustang and Invader were RAF names for the P-51 and A-36 respectively. Apache was briefly the official USAAC name for the P-51, however this never became widely used and was later supplanted by the RAF name of Mustang. The USAAC never gave the A-36 a name and they were usually refered to either as 'A-36's' or 'Mustangs'
