and, finally, Chief of Gendarmery and Chief of the so-called
Third Department
(Третье отделение; Political Surveillance and Investigations Department) of
His Imperial Highness's Personal Chancellery
(

). Nikolai Mezentsov was assassinated by
Sergey Kravchinsky
in response to the execution of
revolutionary
Ivan Kovalsky
