Nikolai Mezentsov

Nikolai Vladimirovich Mezentsov (Николай Владимирович Мезенцов in Russian) (4.11(23).1827 - 8.4(16).1878) was a Russian statesman, adjutant general (1871), member of the State Council (1877). Nikolai Mezentsov began his military career in 1845. He participated in the Crimean War of 1853-1856. In 1864, Mezentsov was appointed Chief of Staff of the Gendarmery Corps, then Deputy Chief of Gendarmery in 1874 and, finally, Chief of Gendarmery and Chief of the so-called Third Department (Третье отделение; Political Surveillance and Investigations Department) of His Imperial Highness's Personal Chancellery (1876). Nikolai Mezentsov was assassinated by Sergey Kravchinsky in response to the execution of revolutionary Ivan Kovalsky.
