Nihonjinron

Nihonjinron (日本人論, "discourse on the Japanese") is a Japanese term referring to a genre of discourses that examine certain unique characteristics, behaviors, or thinking-patters of the Japanese people. Contrary to a common western perception that recognizes Nihonjinron as a nationalist ideology comparable to Nazism, Nihonjinron could discuss the unique features of the Japanese in a critical manner, blaming them for the underachievement and failures of the people rather than praising the features for success and achievement. Also many foreign authors have written nihonjinron such as Ruth Benedict's The Chrysanthemum and the Sword and Eugen Herrigel's Zen in the Art of Archery among others.
