Nicolae Grigorescu Nicolae Grigorescu (15 May 1838, Pitaru, Dmboviţa - 21 July 1907, Cmpina) is one of the founders of modern Romanian painting. He was born in the village of Pitaru in the Dmboviţa county, being the sixth child of Ion and Ruxandra Grigorescu. In 1843, when his father died, the family moved to Bucharest. At an young age (between 1848 and 1850), he became apprentice at the workshop of the Czech painter Anton Chladek and created icons for the church of Băicoi and the monastery of Căldăruşani. In 1856 he created the historical composition Mihai scăpnd stindardul, which he presents to the Wallachian domnitor, Barbu Ştirbei, together with a petition asking for financial aid for his studies. Between 1856 and 1857, he painted the church of the monastery of Zamfira, Prahova county, and in 1861 the church of the monastery of Agapia. With the help of Mihail Kogălniceanu, he received a scholarship to study in Paris. In the autumn of 1861, young Grigorescu leave for Paris, where he studied at th Belle-Arte School, in the meantime he attended the workshop of Sebastien Cornu, where he had as colleague Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Knowing his minuses, he studied especially drawing and composition. However, he soon leave this workshop and, attracted by the artistic concepts of the Barbizon school, he settled in this city, where he learnt from the experiance of artists such as Millet, Corot, Gustave Courbet and Thodore Rousseau. Influenced by this artistic medium, Grigorescu was concerned about learning new artistic means of expression within the framework of the cult for the "en plain-air" painting, which was preparing the affirmation of the Impressionism. As part of the "Universal Exposition" of Paris (1867), he contributed with seven works, then exhibited at the Paris Saloon of 1868 the painting Tnără ţigancă (Gypsy girl), returned to Romania for a few times and starting 1870 he participated at the exhibits of living artists and at those organized by the Society of the Friends of the Belle-Arts. Between 1873-1874 he travels to Italy, Greece and Vienna. In 1877 he was called to accompany the Romanian Army as a "front painter". During the fights of Griviţa and Rahova, he made drawings and sketches which would be used for some compositions. in 1889 he Participates at the Universal Exhibition in Paris and at the Romanian Atheneum. Personal exhibition at the Romanian Atheneum will follow in 1891, 1895, 1897, 1902, 1905. From 1879 until 1890 he worked in France, especially in Vitr, Bretagne and in his workshop in Paris. Returned in Romania, he opened several exhibitions at the Romanian Atheneum between 1891 and 1904. In 1890 he settled in Cmpina and started using rustic subjects, especially peasant girls, ox carts on the dusty country roads and other pastoral landscapes. He was named honour member of the Romanian Academy in 1899. Nicolae Grigorescu died on 21 July 1907 in Cmpina.
