niccol dell'abbate

Niccolo dell' Abbate (also known as Nicol dell'Abbate and Niccolo Abati), (b. 1509 or 1512 in Modena, Italy; d. 1571 (?) in Fontainebleau, France), was an Italian mannerist painter and celebrated fresco-painter of Modena who studied under Giulio Romano. He is credited with the development of landscape painting as a discipline in France as he was one of the first to paint and display landscapes there ("Landscape with Orpheus and Eurydice" (around 1555) on display in the National Gallery, London). His pictures exhibit a combination of skill in drawing, grace and natural coloring. Some of his easel pieces in oil are in different collections; one of them, "The Martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul", is in the Dresden gallery. From around 1552 until his death he assisted Primaticcio in the decorations at the palace at Fontainebleau.
