Niandra Lades And Usually Just A T-shirtNiandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt is Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante's debut solo album, released in 1994 on American Recordings. John says he released this album when his friends actor Johnny Depp and a Butthole Surfers member encouraged him to release his solo music saying that there was "no good music around anymore". This album consists of John's singing, his guitar and piano playing, and some strange effects (including backwards instruments and tape speed modifications) all recorded on a 4-track recorder. Toni, Frusciante's consistent friend of 10 years, also sings on some of the latter tracks. Most of the songs on this album were recorded before John left the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992 (during the Blood Sugar Sex Magik tour), and indeed, much of the first part of the album was recorded as the band were recording BSSM in 1991. "Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt" was for a long time a very rare and hard-to-find album, since in 1998 John had it removed from all record store shelves and stopped publication of it along with his second solo album "Smile From The Streets You Hold"(1997-Birdman Records) because he felt uncomfortable with them being available to the public. However the album has recently been reissued by American Recordings. In 2001 John released his 3rd solo album entitled To Record Only Water for Ten Days under Warner Brothers music, and more recently the more critically viable Shadows Collide With People.
