Newtown is a town located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 25,031.

Government

Elected to a two year term, the Board of Selectmen supervise the administration of the affairs of the town, except those matters which by the General Statute or Town Charter are exclusively committed to the Board of Education or other departments. They are led by a First Selectman, who is the Chief Executive and Administrative Officer of the Town. The current First Selectman is Herbert C. Rosenthal (D).

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 153.0 km² (59.1 mi²). 149.6 km² (57.8 mi²) of it is land and 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.22% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 25,031 people, 8,325 households, and 6,776 families residing in the town. The population density is 167.3/km² (433.4/mi²). There are 8,601 housing units at an average density of 57.5/km² (148.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.14% White, 1.75% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.40% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 2.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,325 households out of which 44.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.3% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.6% are non-families. 14.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.24. In the town the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 104.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $90,193, and the median income for a family is $99,192. Males have a median income of $68,965 versus $42,217 for females. The per capita income for the town is $37,786. 3.1% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Famous people
