Newton North High SchoolNewton North High School is the largest high school in Newton, Massachusetts with more than 2,000 students. Physical plan The physical plan of Newton North is similar in many ways to that of a jail. This is no coincidence as the building was designed in the 1970s by an architect who specialized in designing jails. Rumor has it that Newton North is riot-proof, but luckily we have never had to find out. There is a main hallway called "main street" which stretches for a quarter of a mile and this is the epicenter of life at Newton North. The majority of students' lockers are on Main St. and different locker sections are painted different colors. Newton North has been around for a long time and the air conditioning and heating systems do not work very well. In a few years a new building is going to be built (that is, if they ever decide on a design), but there are many who will be nostalgic for the old building. Athletics Newton North takes great pride in its athletics. Newton North competes in the Bay State league with other suburban Boston public schools such as Brookline High School, Welesley High School, Needham High School, Weymouth High School, Dedham High School, Walpole High School, and Norwood High School. The Newton North colors are orange and black. The Newton North sporting teams, with the exception of the football and baseball teams, have been somewhat successful. In the fall of 2001 the men's soccer team had a magical ride through the state tournament to advance to the state finals. This was the first time the men's team had ever made it that far in the tournament. The finals were played in Worcester at Worcester State College and Newton North suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to St. Johns of Schrewsbury. In that same year, the basketball team lost in the first round of the state tournament to Bridgewater-Raynham in overtime on a desperation shot from half court as the buzzer sounded. This was the first season for coach Paul Connolly, who led the Tigers through a stellar regular season only to suffer this epic defeat in the playoffs. Despite those two disappointing losses, the men's indoor track team won the state championship that same year. Academics Newton North is one of the state's leading academic institutions. The school offers classes ranging from learning to work in the auto body shop to child development to AP molecular biology. The student body of Newton North is very diverse and the variety of academic offerings reflect that diversity. Famous alumni The most famous alumnus of Newton North is Matt LeBlanc, who is the actor who plays the role of Joey, a character on the popular show Friends. External links *Newton North High School
