The New Urbanism in the United States seems to split into two different factions. On the East Coast, Andrs Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk emphasise the historicistic design of houses and developments. On the West Coast, Peter Calthorpe has worked mainly on linking new development and public transport (known as transit-oriented development or TOD). However, the new urbanism has been criticized as well for several reasons. The results of new urbanists' developments are often disappoining in comparison to the original aims. Critics have pointed to an underlying social deterministic current in the new urbanism.
