New Jersey State Highway 440

New Jersey State Highway 440 is a state highway in New Jersey, United States. It is actually two highways connected by New York State Highway 440. The Middlesex County, New Jersey section of NJ 440 starts at Exit 10 of the New Jersey Turnpike (where it continues as Interstate 287) and continues to the Outerbridge Crossing in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. After spending some distance in Staten Island, NJ/NY 440 crosses the Bayonne Bridge into Bayonne, New Jersey, where the Hudson County, New Jersey section starts. NJ 440 then continues through Bayonne and Jersey City, New Jersey before ending at the U.S. 1/U.S. 9 Truck route. A section in Hudson County between the Bayonne Bridge and the west side of Jersey City was formerly state highway 169, but was renamed 440 in 2001 to achieve continuity with the numbering of the New York State portion of the road on Staten Island. The original plan was to extend NJ 440 along the west side of Bayonne, but local opposition killed the project. Much of the right-of-way for the proposed NJ 440 in Bayonne is now being developed as parkland.
