New Jersey Naval MuseumThe New Jersey Naval Museum (NJNM) introduces state residents and visitors to New Jersey's Navy heritage and naval history in general. The star attraction here is the USS Ling (SS-297), a 312-foot long Balao-class submarine of World War II. The museum is located in Hackensack, and operated by the Submarine Memorial Association. A guided tour takes visitors from bow to stern, exploring the Ling's equipment, quarters and weaponry, which included twenty-four torpedoes and two 5" deck guns (today's Ling sports one 4" gun) for handling military targets too small to warrant the expenditure of a torpedo. Along with Ling, volunteers maintain Japanese Kaiten IIs, a WWII Japanese suicide torpedo, a German Seahund, a WWII German 2 man coastal defense submarine, and the newest addition to the Museum: A Vietnam War era PBR (Patrol Boat, River). The museum building itself contains a number of different and unique items ranging from a SEAL delivery vehicle to personal photos and effects. External link *
