Neustadt (Weinstrae)

Neustadt an der Weinstrae, otherwise known as Neustadt a.d. Weinstr. (abbreviated), Neustadt/Weinstrasse (as it would appear on train departure and arrival boards) or Neustadt (Weinstrasse). It is located in Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. With 53,892 inhabitants as of 2002, it is probably the largest city called Neustadt. Neustadt a.d. W. is one of several dozen German and Austrian cities called Neustadt - Neustadt translates as "New City" or "New Town," hence the profusion of likenamed communities. These New Towns are typically distinguished by the rivers upon which they lie (e.g., Neustadt (Aisch)), the regions they are located in (e.g., Neustadt/Hessen) or, in this case, a peculiar distinctive feature -- namely "Wine Street," "Wine Highway" or "Wine Route."
