Netspace

Netspace is one of Australia's major Internet Service Providers. The company focuses primarily on aDSL-based Internet access. Netspace was established in 1992 as a bulletin-board dial-up service, this company has evolved in tune with the evolution of internet technology; Netspace has always been at the crest of the ever-growing technology wave. Along the way, Netspace has developed into an award-winning organisation, recognised for its product and service excellence and serving as a tremendous model of a 100% Australian-owned and operated company. Driving Netspace is the philosophy that the internet should be accessible for everyone. Netspace is one of Australia's longest established Internet Service Providers (ISP) and broadband specialist that is 100 per cent Australian owned and operated. Headquartered in Melbourne and with a local presence in Western Australia and Tasmania, Netspace is committed to keeping communication technology simple, fair and accessible for all Australians to enjoy. Netspace has developed a highly reliable and stable national network that provides full redundancy backed by technical expertise, engineering excellence and support from a 24x7 Network Operations Centre (NOC) and dedicated customer support team. Today Netspace employs more than eighty staff catering to the needs of over 58,000 customers, including 20,000 broadband customers nationally, and provides internet services to approximately 60% of Victorian schools using the VicOne network. In 2001 when ADSL opened up to resellers at an affordable price, Netspace was one of the first ISPs on the market. Their two plans (at the time) included 3 Gb for $70, or 10 Gb for $100, both of which encouraged competition in an area previously dominated by Telstra Bigpond, the infrastructure owner.

In the Beginning...

Netspace began back in 1992, when founders, Stuart Marburg and Richard Preen ran a popular Apple bulletin board dial-up service as a sideline project while at School and University. Running the business from Marburgs study soon became very difficult as demand for their service grew. Very soon the pair realised that the time had come to turn their university side project into a real business and moved out of his study and into a small office in Hartwell, Melbourne. From these early beginnings, Netspace was born. Between 1999 and 2001, Netspace quickly extended its reach across Australia through organic growth and the acquisition of four well established smaller ISPs: Infinity One, Globec, Dynamic Bell and Eagles Internet. Netspaces early success was driven by its core philosophy which still holds true today: To make communications technology accessible, affordable and uncomplicated for all Australians to enjoy. Marburg and Preen realised that innovation was key to deliver on this promise and in 1997 Netspace became one of the first Australian ISPs to move to digital modem equipment that provided customers with a 56 kbit/s dial-up service. When ADSL technology first became available to ISPs in 2000, Netspace was once again one of the first ISPs to offer a commercial service and has since continued to lead the way in broadband product innovation with the launch of initiatives such as peak and off peak plans, flat rate plans and peer-to-peer. In 2001 the company launched Spacecentre, a state-of-the-art data warehousing facility, and in 2002 launched Encircle, a calling card service.
