Nerd Riots

The nerd riots were an in-joke among the nerds of the Internet. It was started by the popular web comic PvP, which on December 27 (http://www.pvponline.com/archive.php3?archive=20031227) featured characters of the comic addressing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, encouraging them to award their next Academy Award for Best Picture to the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In the last panel one said: "Do the right thing. No one wants to say they lived through the nerd riots of 2004." Predictably, this quickly spread until February 29, when The Return of the King won a staggering 11 Oscars, including Best Picture.
