Neopets Trading Card GameIntroduction The Neopets Trading Card Game is a spin off of the popular virtual pet website, Neopets.com. The trading card game's production date is currently unknown, and is produced by Wizards of the Coast, a large trading card company that produces a varity of other trading card games. As with many other trading card games, there are two purposes to the trading cards, to collect the cards and to play a devised game using the cards. Types of Cards The various cards are divided into sections that affect game play. These different types are as follows: Location, Item, Fate, Equipment, Basic Neopet, Experienced Neopet, Something Has Happened, Hero, and Villain Cards. Basic Neopet The Basic Neopet cards are the foundation of the game, and are based upon fictional Neopets taken from the Neopets website, including the species and colour of the Neopet. The cards list four abilities, and their levels: strength, agility, intellegence, and magic. Each of these has a number, the higher the number meaning the power that Neopet has in that catagory. Basic Neopets never have a printed score higher than 9, or lower than 1. Experienced Neopet The Experienced Neopet is much like the higher evolution in the Pokmon trading card game: The Experienced Neopet has much more power in all catagories, and often has helpful side effects that influence various part of the game. The Experienced Neopet cards consists of a Neopet's species, and an adjective describing that Neopet's occupation. (Jubjub Engineer, for example.) However, only one species can turn into another Experienced Neopet with the same species. (Only a Jubjub can turn itno a Jubjub Engineer, for example, a Mynci cannot.) Item & Equipment Item and Equipment cards both increase a Neopet's abilities, by adding points onto the predescribed number in a certain catagory, or have certain side effects that affect game play. However, there is one difference: while Items can only be used once before being discarded, Equipment may be attached to the Neopet until removed with another anti-Equipment card. Items and Equipment are also the only cards worth points. A player needs to "bank" 21 points worth of Items and Equipment cards to win the game. Heros & Villains Villain cards and Hero cards both have tremendously enlarged ability numbers, and are directly oppose each other. If a Villain is played, then a special contest must be set up for that villain, the area where the card is played being roped off until the Villain is confronted. A Hero can be used only once, usually to oppose a Villain, before being taken off the arena for later use. Something Has Happened! & Fate These two cards types are both cards that can be played to cause great changes to play. Something Has Happened! cards usually cause a one-time event to occur, while Fate cards actually have two alternate subcatagories:Curse and Quest. Something Has Happened! imitates the random events prescribed on the Neopets website, affecting part of a battle once. Fate cards, as said, are made up of Curse and Quest cards. Curses usually affect the opponent's Neopet, disabling it to some extent. Quest cards affect all part of the game, and are (usually) neutral. Location The final card catagory is Location, which can be played in one area to affect all battles both present and future to give an advantage to a certain kind of Neopet or to give some type of side effect to any battles occurring there. The Location cards are based upon fantasy locations on the Neopets website. Expansions The Neopets trading card game has been a series of expansions, each release including new cards and new catagories of cards. First Expansion Set The first expansion was simply an introductory set, with no prevailing theme what so ever. This set introduced the types of cards known as the Basic Neopet, Experienced Neopet, Hero, Villain, Item, Equipment, and Something Has Happened!. The Basic Neopet types that were introduced were the Aisha, the Usul, the Korbat, the Mynci, the Scorchio, and the Shoyru, the Kacheek, the Acara, the Lupe, and the Grarrl. Battle For Meridell This expansion's release was coorinated with an online plot/war, which was set in the virtual fedual-styled land of Meridell. Thus, the cards in this set were themed with a Middle Ages-like style. This expansion introduced the style of card known as the Location card. The Return of Sloth Intending to be based with a online plot, this plan failed to put further effort into another, subquent plot. This expansion's theme was space, giving such equipment items as a robot, etc. No new card types were introduced in this expansion. Mystery Island Based upon a tropical island locale, this expansion gave no new card types and had no relating plot. Hannah and the Ice Caves Revolving around a central popular game character known as Hannah the Usul, a major substantial plot has been released with this latest expansion on the Neopets website. The based locale for this expansion was a winter, icy environment, and was released on October 22nd, 2004. A game is also based upon the plot of this expansion of the same name, and is currently on-line the Neopets website. This expansion introduced the Basic Neopets known as the Bori, and the Bruce, among others.
