NavoiNavoi ("Navoiy" in Uzbek) is a city in the South-Western part of Uzbekistan. It is named after the great Uzbek poet and statesman Alisher Navoi, who wrote in Persian and Chaghatai at the court of Emir Husein Boykara (or Husayn Bayqaro) in Herat. Originally known as Kermine ("Karmana") under the Bukharan Emirate, the city was re-founded in 1958, when it was known under the Russian name of Sokolov. The population of the city is around 128 000 people. Also, Navoi is an administrative region of Uzbekistan which includes former 8 districts ("rayon"s) of Bukhara and Samarqand. Navoi Region is located in the southwest part of Uzbekistan in the middle of the Kyzylkum desert. The total area of the Region is 110,800 square kilometers. The Region has a typical dry, continental climate. The population is approximately 767,500 people, about 59,4 % of whom live in rural areas and 40,6 % live in urban areas. The Region is divided into 8 administrative districts. Other large cities of the Region are Uchkuduk and Zarafshan. Navoi Region has large stocks of natural gas and deposits of precious metals, as well as large stocks of raw materials for production of construction materials. The total foreign trade turnover of the Region for 1997 was 497,6 million US dollars. The economy of Region is composed of the open pit mining, metallurgical and chemical enterprises. Among these enterprises are Navoi and Zarafshan Gold Mining and Metallurgical Complexes, which extract one of the purest gold in the world. The enterprise NavoiyAzot is the largest producer of mineral fertilizers in the country. There are other plants in the Region on food production. The growth of the industrial potential of the Region is expected to be achieved from the following activity: - Reconstruction, technical modernization and expansion of the existing enterprises; - Creation of the new enterprises designed for an effective utilization of the local raw materials; - Research and utilization of mineral and water resources; - Development of the agriculture- in particular cotton and cattle-breeding (astrakhan sheep). 90 % of the Regions territory is ideally suitable for agricultural activity. The projects of agricultural infrastructure development are expected to provide: a utilization of ground water, the volume of which is approximately 3,7 million cubic meters per day and 1,5 million cubic meters per day in dry regions. The project also includes a construction of systems using wind power, as well as irrigation systems and pumping stations for an effective utilization of virgin soils. An increase of astrakhan sheep breeding is also stipulated. - Processing and production of cotton, astrakhan wool, cocoons of silkworm, leather for tanning production, and also development of fruit and vegetable processing industry; - production of oil, sugar, canned juices and childrens meals. The investment program of the Region includes 32 projects with the grand total budget of 712,5 million US dollars. In territory of the Region there are 3 airports.
