The first class of undergraduates registered in September 1996. Origin of the University's Name The name Chi Nan ("north to south") comes from "Tribune of Yu" chapter of Classic of History, where a passage reads: "His speech and teachings spread from north to south, until they reached the four corners of the world." Chi Nan was first used as the title of an academic organization more than a century ago. "Chi Nan Academy", established in 1906, almost at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and dedicated to educating talented Chinese youths born or raised abroad. Its founder loved ancient quotes and chose this to convey the school's mission: to spread Chinese culture and learning from North to South, from China to the overseas world. Chi Nan Academy later developed into "Chi Nan University", which was established in Shanghai after the founding of the Republic of China These two organizations have no direct connection with the one established in 1991 in Taiwan. Yet the choice of the name "Chi Nan" conveys the intention to take up thier mission and to devote to the education of talented youths from both within and outside of China.
