Nanokernel

  Kernel (computer science). 
Nanokernel is the lowest-level part of the system software for PowerPC processor-based Macintosh computers. More generally, a nanokernel is so small that even some basic hardware controllers aren't managed by the core kernel. E.g the PIC (Programmable Interrupt Controller) or either the Timer are considered as devices and managed externally.
