My Dark Places

My Dark Places was a 1996 nonfiction book by James Ellroy, in which he attempts to solve the mystery of his mother's murder by hiring a retired Los Angeles County homicide detective to investigate the crime. Ellroy also explores how being directly affected by a crime shaped his life - often for the worst - and led him to write crime novels. As a promotional stunt, he autographed stacks of blank pages to be bound into every copy of the hardback.
