Mutha's Day Out

Mutha's Day Out is a hip-hop thrash metal band formed in November 1991 from the desolate town of Batesville, Arkansas. The band consisted of: Mikal Moore (Vocals), Brice Stephens (Rapping Vocals), Chuck Schaaf (Guitars), Jeff Morgan (Bass), and Rodney Moffitt (Drums). Apparently, the name comes from the daycare center of the exact same name, but with "Mother's" changing to "Mutha's."

The Quick Rise

In April 1992, the band traveled to Memphis in search of a cheap recording studio. The band was booked to play the Crossroads Music Festival the very same week, thanks to a very supportive engineer named Doug Easley, who had produced Mutha's Day Out's first demo. In the same performance, Mutha's Day Out's first, a representative from Chrysalis Records was present, there to see another band. However, the representative at Chrysalis liked Mutha's Day Out so much they were offered the contract instead of the other band on the spot. They went to the studio to record their first and only album, "My Soul is Wet." The album was released on October 19th, 1993. When the band first came together, Mikal (far left) was 20 years old, Brice (far right, with the "My Brain Sucks, You Should Know That" T-shirt) was 18 years old, Chuck (sitting, face averted, next to Brice) was 17 years old, Rodney (wearing the cap, near Mikal) was 17 years old, and Jeff (in the distance, barely visable) was 15 years old. They were the youngest rock band to be signed by such a major label in years.

The Singles

Mutha's Day Out released two singles, one for Locked and one for My Soul is Wet, and had three videos which all aired on Headbangers Ball on MTV: one for Locked, one for My Soul is Wet, and one for Green, which aired only once. The video for Locked aired on a segment on Beavis and Butthead, which helped push record sales, but they were broken up at that time. There is also an apparent unreleased We All Bleed Red single that appeared on Ebay not too long ago. Mutha's Day Out was also receiving regular airplay across the United States on the radio and were featured in articles in popular rock magazines.

The B-Sides and Demos

Mutha's Day Out had 7 exclusive B-Side tracks besides what was on the album: 1. Willard (Mikal Moore, Chuck Schaaf) - 3:24 2. Mudpies (Mikal Moore, Lance Branstetter) - 4:31 3. Idiot Among Us (Mikal Moore, Lance Branstetter) - 3:11 4. Through Mine (Mikal Moore, Brice Stephens, Lance Branstetter) - 3:04 5. I Thirst (Mikal Moore, Chuck Schaaf, Jeff Morgan) - 4:17 6. Love is a Hate Situation (Mikal Moore, Lance Branstetter) - 2:31 7. Get a Clue (Demo Version) (Mikal Moore, Lance Branstetter) - 2:48 Willard comes from the CD version of Locked and was published by Timmy Roach Music (BMI). Mudpies and Idiot Among Us come from the CD version of the My Soul is Wet single and were published by Timmy Roach Music/Branstetter Music. Through Mine and I Thirst come from the vinyl record version of Locked. Through Mine was published by Timmy Roach Music/Branstetter Music (BMI) and I Thirst was published by Timmy Roach Music (BMI). Love is a Hate Situation and Get a Clue (Demo Version) come from the vinyl record version of the My Soul is Wet single and were published by Timmy Roach Music/Branstetter Music (BMI). Mudpies, Idiot Among Us, Love is a Hate Situation, and Get a Clue (Demo Version) were all originally part of the demo made at Doug Easley's in Memphis on "no money and no sleep!"

The Tours

Mutha's Day Out toured the United States and Europe from 1993 to 1994. They were opening for bands like Jackyl, Sugartooth, and the Bulletboys. The band sped up all of their songs live, and Jeff, at one point during the tour, was in a leg brace, but was insistent on playing. Even with the leg brace on, he was hobbling around stage. During their tour in the United States, they stayed in cheap hotels to lower the cost of the record company's tour bill.

Live at the Virgin Megastore

People in Paris liked them so much, that when they played there, extra security had to be called in. A live E.P. of the show at the Virgin Megastore in Paris was released, but in limited quantities. You had to be at the show to receive a copy, and it is so rare, that, to this day, the band does not have a copy of it. See Paris Live E.P. for more information.

Appearance in Mortal Kombat

Mutha's Day Out received their big break when they appeared in the 1995 movie Mortal Kombat, during Scene 2, inside the techno bar, while Sonya Blade searches for Kano amongst a large crowd moshing to them. Their song, "What U See," is featured on the soundtrack to Mortal Kombat. It is looped three times to form a four minute song. The looped song also features a short cowbell intro and the removal of the foul language the song had originally contained. Apparently, Christopher Lambert, the actor who played Rayden, liked them. Their management was getting all sorts of calls about them. However, they were broken up at that time.

Other Facts

There are other weird facts about Mutha's Day Out. Brice Stephens is the one on the album cover, in the background, and the girl in front is a friend of his. The Batesville police even tried using the "after-curfew" excuse to shut down the video shooting of the My Soul is Wet video, even though her parents were present at the shooting. Mikal Moore had been tossed out of his home in 1994 and was living in a Motel 6 because "he couldn't afford anything better."

Why Did They Break Up?

The apparent reason for their break-up is that Mikal Moore, the vocalist, frontman, and co-writer of every one of Mutha's Day Out's songs, fell in love with a United Kingdom fan, and that drew him away from the band. Without Mikal, the band was useless. This has yet to be confirmed.

Where to Buy Mutha's Day Out Merchandise

Their album is no longer being produced. The address listed on the CD cover insert is invalid and will be returned to sender. The management is also very difficult in contacting. They are no longer handling any of the band's affairs. Used copies of their album may be available on Ebay or Amazon.co.uk. This is the only way to purchase Mutha's Day Out merchandise.

A Second Album?

There has been a rumor that there is a second Mutha's Day Out album out there, with new material, and a live version of Locked. It is apparently called I Am Dead. It was supposedly released in 1992, which cannot be possible because Mutha's Day Out's first album was released in 1993. Or else it might be one large demo or an album they produced before being signed to a label. This is unconfirmed, but is more than likely a hoax. See I Am Dead for more information.

Where Are They Now?

Today, Mikal Moore is in a band called Gazer, located in Arkansas. Brice Stephens has returned to Batesville, Arkansas after a 2-year stay in Florida and is jamming with Rodney Moffitt. Chuck Schaaf formed a band called Deadbird with his brother, Phillip Schaaf, in Little Rock, Arkansas, and their first album, The Head and the Heart, is scheduled for re-release soon. Jeff Morgan now plays drums for a band called Rwake, out of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
