Munuswamy Veerappan Gounder

Munuswamy Veerappan Gounder also known as Veerappan was a famous dacoit in south India. He was living in the jungles of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The tall, wiry bandit -- who was in his 50s, sported a long twirling moustache and was usually clad in military camouflage -- was known as the "Jungle Cat" for his ability to move and disappear in the southern forests that were his home for decades.

History

Veerappan began as an ordinary criminal but quickly graduated into sandalwood and ivory smuggling. He also turned into a cold-blooded killer, sparing none who came in his way, not even government officials, one of whom he beheaded after luring him into his hideout. In recent years, he moved closer to Tamil extremists in Tamil Nadu known to be sympathetic to Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger guerrillas. In 2000, he created a sensation by kidnapping Rajkumar, a respected film star turned politician of Karnataka.
