Munich U-bahn

The History of the Munich U-Bahn goes back to the early 1960s when the city was searching for a way to cut down on traffic congestion in the central parts of the city. It was decided in 1964 to sink the tram routes within the central area into cut & cover subways. It was very quickly realised that the previous plans for a subway tramway system would not be sufficient to carry the city's heavy loads during peak hours. In 1966 Munich was awarded the 1972 Olympic Games which accelerated the plans for an Underground Railway System. The first section was opened on 6 October 1971.
