It will replace the cancelled Universal Docking Module (UDM). The MLM should be ready for launch in the 2006-2007 timeframe. The MLM will be used for experiments, docking and cargo. It will also serve as a crew work and rest area. MLM will also be equipped with an attitude control system that can be used as a backup by the ISS.
