Mullerian agenesis
refers to a condition in a female where the
mullerian ducts
fail to develop and a uterus will not be present. A woman with this condition will experience primary
amenorrhea
. At
puberty
hormonal changes induce
thelarche
and
adrenarche
, and subsequently ovarian activity is likely to be ovulatory. yet despite
ovulation
, menstruation will not occur. Because of inadequate
vaginal
development it may be necessary to use vaginal dilators or surgery to develop a functioning vagina. The cause of the condition is unknown. Women with this condition can have children through
IVF
with
embryo transfer
to a
gestational carrier
. The condition is also called
Mayer-Rokitansky-Kstner-Hauser (MRKH) Syndrome
