Mullerian Agenesis

Mullerian agenesis refers to a condition in a female where the mullerian ducts fail to develop and a uterus will not be present. A woman with this condition will experience primary amenorrhea. At puberty hormonal changes induce thelarche and adrenarche, and subsequently ovarian activity is likely to be ovulatory. yet despite ovulation, menstruation will not occur. Because of inadequate vaginal development it may be necessary to use vaginal dilators or surgery to develop a functioning vagina. The cause of the condition is unknown. Women with this condition can have children through IVF with embryo transfer to a gestational carrier. The condition is also called Mayer-Rokitansky-Kstner-Hauser (MRKH) Syndrome, named after August Franz Joseph Karl Mayer, Karl Freiherr von Rokitansky, Hermann Kster, and G.A.Hauser.
