Mu Online

Mu Online (also spelled MU Online) is a 3D MMORPG produced by Korean company Webzen.

Story

The story of the game tells that the continent of MU, that was ruled by great emperors has fallen into wars between the many feudal lords of the place. Antonidas, one of those lords was deceived to bring a terrible demon on the continent. All the lords were killed, and without any ruler the continent's hope remains on adventurers that may join their forces so that they can defeat the demon and bring back the old peace the continent deserves.

Code of Conduct

Many players ignore the rules of the game and jump to the action without reading the instructions. As an Online game, MU has its code of conduct made by the players themselves. Most respect it, but sometimes someone may just ignore them. When someone ignores them they usually are considered rude, and make the playing experience less fun, so it's important to follow these simple rules: Don't Ever KS (Kill Steal). When someone starts attacking a monster, do not attack the same monster unless the person asks for help. Attacking the same monster shares the experience and treasures gained, and most don't like others stealing their stuff. Don't Bounty Steal. You can be even dirtier and wait for someone to kill the monster, and then quickly get the gold/item/jewel dropped by the monster. This is extremely disgusting. Don't Kill Other Players. Obvious reason. Someone is there striving to get stronger when someone suddently shows up and kills the character without reason. This leads to frustration, loss of time and sometimes of itens you were carrying. This is the only crime oficially saw as being evil on the game, and if a person kills another player without reason it becomes an Outlaw. Outlaws and heroes If someone kills the other player he/she will be rotulated as an Outlaw. And Outlaw can be recognized by any player on the game, and is separated into three levels. For every person you kill you climb one level, and plus makes you stay on the outlaw stats longer (+3 hours each person). On the first level (warning) your character name gets orange. When monsters or other players kill you, you have a chance to lose an item. You still have Self Defense mode so you can leave the Outlaw status without much trouble. On the second level (1st stage) your character name becomes red. You have a higher chance to lose items and more: You're branded as a murderer and lose your right to self defense, so other people may attack you freely if they want without becoming outlaws. The third level (2nd stage) is where you are oficially a murderer. Your character name becomes dark red. You start to become a shadow and your weapons/wings/shield becomes red. People on the 2nd stage are wanted by the society, and killing 2nd stage outlaws is encouraged. If a player manages to kill three 2nd stage outlaws he/she can become a hero. A Hero is a blessed character. He/She is looked as a helper of the society. The character's name is displayed in blue. The chance of losing items on any case of death is zero, and the person has more chance to have sucess on chaos combinations. Take care that even if you are a hero if you kill someone you'll become an outlaw.

Characters

Players can have several characters, starting being able to create Dark Knights, Fairies and Dark Sorcerers. Later on the game they may create a special class, the Magic Gladiators. Dark Knight (DK) - Typical hero type character. Have a high amount of Health Points (HP), high defense and uses physical attacks to deal damage. Deals a very high damage towards monsters and other players. A dark knight is specialist on using several types of weapons and wearing heavy armors while the other classes can't. The basis of this character is melee, attacking the enemy with brute force rather than strategy. This makes of this class the easiest to play and the most used by new players. Blade Knight (BK) - After finishing the mission, Dark Knight advances to Blade Knight who is much more powerful/stronger and quicker than the DK. Elf - Elves are the middle point between DK and DW. Elves can heal, raise defense, raise attack and can summon monsters. Mainly uses a bow to attack but can use other weapons which is specifically intended for Dark Knights. Another of their abilities are to be able to summon different monsters that usually are hostile to the players to help the elf to fight. They are frequently also called as 'Fairies'. Muse Elf - After finishing the mission, Elf advances to Muse Elf who is much more powerful/stronger and quicker than the Elf. Dark Wizards (DW) - Cast spells with their energy and uses it to attack. Have a very low hp and the lowest def. But a Dark Wizard is never to be underestimated. Once high level a Dark Wizard can kill faster than any Dark Knight. Unlike elves, all of their spells consist on doing harm on the enemy, instead of increasing the character's strenght except for the Teleport spell and the Mana Shield spell. Soul Master (SM) - After finishing the mission, Dark Wizard advances to Soul Master who is much more powerful/stronger and quicker than the DW. Magic Gladiators (MG) - If a player manages to make one of his characters reach level 220 the player can create a special type of character called the Magic Gladiator. These characters are a special mix of Dark Wizards and Dark Knights. They can use the weapons and armor of the Dark Knights while they can also make the same sorceries the Dark Wizards do, except for Teleport. They get stronger than other characters as they level up. Unlike other characters, that need powerfull boots to run the Magic Gladiators are always up to running regardless of that. Dark Lord (DL) - It is considered to be the advanced form of MG but the only way to unlock him is to reach the 300 level with your character. Dark Lord is the most powerful char but he cannot wear wings. He is able to fly only when wearing the Cape of Lord or riding a Dinorant. He can also ride the Dark Horse and handle pets of nature. He attacks normaly or with spells. Available only in the 99b or more version of the game. You can chose your character depending on your playing style. If you like simple and efficient things, chose the Dark Knight. If you want to start a bit weak but being a one-hit killer on the end chose the Dark Wizard. If you like strategy and likes to make friends be an Elf. You can have more than one character so if you want you can play with all of them. -Stats- Every character has 4 basic stats. When you get enought exp. and you level up you can assign 5 points freely to these stats, making the character much more powerful. Magic Gladiator character wins 7 extra points instead of 5. Dark Lord wins 9 extra points. Strength This measures the body capacity of the character. The more you invest on this stats the more damage you'll make when striking with a melee weapon (bows and crossbows aren't improved). A larger strenght allows the character to wear better armor and use better weapons. Agility This measures the character's dexterity. The more you have, the stronger will be your defense and offense. This also increases your attack speed and the chance of avoiding attacks. Some weapons require large numbers of agility points, and elves must pay attention as it is the main stats for them and their armor and weapons usually require more agility than strenght. Vitality Vitality is self-explanatory. The more you invest on this the more HP you'll have. That's all. Energy This is the character's ability into dealing with the supernatural. Dark wizards and elves need large ammounts of energy to cast their spells, and Dark Knights can improve their skills. Investing into energy also increases your maximum mana and mana recharging rate. Darklord has one more stat the "Command" and shows the ability of the char to handle his nature pets (Dark Horse, The Eagle, etc)

Towns and places

Lorencia - Is the main land on the MU continent. The Dark Knights and Dark Wizards start the game here. Fairies that wish to visit Lorencia will have to get to level 10 first. It's one of the easiest lands on the game, suitable to train low level characters before they can go to other places. The city is the principal trading center on the game, where characters are always coming to trade with other players. The entrace to the Dungeon is also on Lorencia. Noria - To the east of Lorencia, Noria is where the elves start the game. It's slightly harder than Lorencia, and Dark Knights and Dark Wizards need to get to level 10 before being able to visit. It's considered one of the most beautiful land on MU. The wicked Chaos Machine, located on the center of the city, is used to create special and powerful itens used by high level characters. Davias or(Devias) - Davias, located north of Lorencia, is a place where it's always snowing. The snow is permanent, and dangerous creatures are all around the place, so characters need to reach level 15 first. It's a place highly frequented by med-high level characters on the game, as it suits their needs. On the northernmost part of Davias is the Lost Tower. Dungeon - It's a cave located on Lorencia. A fearful creature has settled in the deepest room of the Dungeon and keeps sending monsters outside. The Dungeon is a three story cave, and as you get deeper the monsters get stronger and more deadly. If you happen to defeat the creature on the last room, you can get many nice treasures. Lost Tower - A huge tower located on northernmost Davias. This tower was invaded by an army of monsters, and it's the hardest place to play on MU. Players usually join themselves and get inside the tower. Most leave only dying. This tower has 8 stories, getting harder as you climb. Atlans - To the east of Noria there's only sea, however experienced adventurers can venture underwater to a new world called Atlans. The players here swim instead of walking or flying, and you can't go there with a mount (Uniria/Unicorn, Dinorant). On the bottom of Atlans lies the Hydra, Kundun's ex most powerful ally. Adventurers need to be level 60 to enter Atlans. Tarkan - Tarkan is about the north-east side of Atlans. It is the desert of MU where Zaikan lies. Very powerful creatures live there and it's the last place a warrior should enter before reaching Icarus. Icarus - Icarus is a place north-east of the seventh floor of the Lost Tower. You may enter only if you have been equiped with wings or a dinorant. The last level of the game where the monsters are really powerful. Usually players party together to go in such a scary place. Here lies the Flaming Phoenix the "elite" monster of MU which usually drops the best items around. Blood Castle - A place you can enter from Davias Church only when the event is on. You will need the Invisibility Cloak made in the Chaos Machine. A mini-quest awaits inside for you to accomplish. Destroy the monsters, destroy the city gate, eliminate the Spirit Sorcerers and break the Crystal Statue to earn the Angel Weapon. Bring the Angel Weapon back to the Angel to win the Blood Castle (aka BC) event. Devil Square - Devil Square is an event like Blood Castle. You can enter it from Noria and you will need the Devil Invitation. More monsters await there to be eliminated, no quest but a rumor is about to say that the jewel success drop rate is a bit higher inside. Stadium - (aka Arena) Should two guilds be on war they can reason their fights playing 'MU soccer' on the arena. Other players way watch the game if they want. Also you may find some monster cages at the west area of this map. (You may find places in different servers like "atlans2" or "icarus2" and this is because the server admin can create as many places as he wants) More locations can show up as the game is being built.

Monsters

As in any RPG, MU is populated by a big variety of monsters, from simple ones like goblins to frightening ones like the Elite Yeti or Gorgon. Each monster is different from the others, have different spawn points and others. To have more precise info on monsters you can check the * Official Global Webpage for stuff like descriptions and info. Special Monsters Some monsters don't have a precise spawn point and appear randomly on the game. These monsters usually are golden and drop very valious or important treasures when they get defeated. On the global server we have the Golden Budge Dragon and the Golden Goblin. The first drops the Box of Luck and the late drops Box of Kundun +1. Both monsters show up only on Lorencia, Noria or Devias. Event Monsters The server may be running an in-game event for extra fun. Sometimes special strong monsters will show up on some maps, often carrying valuable items. When they show up an announcement will show up on the screen, and adventurers will chase after the monsters and defeat them. Different servers run different events.

Spells

Like on most RPG games the characters can use many different kinds of magic and special abilities. Each character has its own set of spells, some weapons may be chanted in order to give the character a specific spell. Using a spell will make you spend some MP (mana, or magic points). Here follows a small sumary of spells that can be used by each character (doesn't include weapon spells): Dark Knight
  • Twisting Slash Skill - The Dark Knight hits all the surrounding targets with a spinning attack.
Dark Wizard
  • Energy Ball - A simple energy ball that deals minor damage.
  • Fire Ball - A stronger version of the Energy Ball
  • Power Wave - A wave of energy is sent to the enemy, hitting it.
  • Lightning - A lightning from the Dark Wizard hits the target, stunning him for a few moments.
  • Teleport - Teleport the Dark Wizard as far as the screen goes. Good for passing trought the Dungeon's walls.
  • Meteorite - A meteorite strikes the enemy.
  • Ice - Freezes and damages the target. The frozen target moves very slowly.
  • Poison - Poison the target. It deals a small damage to the target for 10 seconds.
  • Flame - A flame pillar erupt from the ground, dealing powerful and continuous damage.
  • Twister - A tornado hits the target, dealing high damage.
  • Evil Spirit - Spirits fly across the screen, hiting multiple targets.
  • Hell Fire - The fires of hell come to the surface forming a star-shaped symbol on the ground, hitting all the targets around the Dark Wizard.
  • Aqua Beam - A beam of blue light is fired in a straight line damaging all enemies in its path.
  • Blast - Same as meteorite using blue graphics and much more quicker.
  • Inferno - Probably the best scroll attack. It creates a circle of fire around the player dealing very high damage to all targets.
Elf
  • Heal - Heals the Health Poits of the Elf herself, other characters and summoned monsters.
  • Greater Defence - Increases the Defense for some time.
  • Greater Damage - Increases the Attack for some time.
  • Goblin Summon - Summons a goblin. The goblin is very weak and prone to die even against the weakest monsters.
  • Golem Summon - Summons a golem. The golem is big and may give some trouble to target, but a nice addition for low level energy elfs.
  • Asassin Summon - Summons an asassin. They are faster and the size doesn't bother. It's alo very strong.
  • Elder Yeti Summon - Summons an Elite Yeti. Elite Yeties are big, but it's a very powerful monster.
  • Dark Knight Summon - Summons a Dark Knight. It's not the character Dark Knight, it's a monster found on the third floor of the dungeon. Stronger than the Elite Yeties.
  • Bali Summon - The strongest summon on the Global servers, the Bali are the only monsters that show up only at summoning.
  • Soldier Summon - Summon a Soldier. Has a ranged attack, but less hp than the Bali.
Bali also can be spelled Vali. Magic Gladiator Can use all Dark Wizard spells except for Teleport and Mana Shield.

Item Stats

The different types of items on MU is the most interesting feature of the game. Besides the normal item variety, items may contain special bonuses on them that are given almost randomly. To create a 'perfect' item on the game is almost impossible. Private servers may make this more acessible to players. Since items can be so different it's common to have your own custom armor. Item Level - The item can have different levels ranging from 0 to 11 on the global servers and often going further on other servers. The item will have a dim or strong glow depending on its level. A higher level item is stronger than the lower level, and will also require more strenght to be used. Example: Bill of Balrog +4, Elven Bow +2, etc.
  • Level 1 and 2 items won't glow. The item will seem to be normal at look.
  • Level 3 and 4 items will glow a dim red light. Level 3 and 4 items still are common.
  • Level 5 and 6 items will glow a dim blue light. Few level 5 items are dropped, so most are upgraded with jewels.
  • Level 7 and 8 items will glow a strong while light. You can only get one of these trought upgrading or trading.
  • Level 9 the items will glow a strong light. Depending on the item it will glow different colors.
  • Level 10 the items will glow the same as level 9, but when the character stands still small lights will fly around the character.
  • Level 11 the items will glow the same as level 10. Together with the small lights energy lines will be dancing around the character.
  • Level 12 and 13 the items will glow like level 11 and a blue light flashes it. Moreover the small lights of level 11 can now me characterized as an aura around the character. The last level for normal items.
  • Level 14 and 15 is only for excellent items. Now nothing is glowing but the player becomes transparent to the backround and posseses some kind of cloak.
Item Options - Items may randomly have options attached to them. These options may make the item stronger (armors, for example add some percentage of defense to the already existing armor). These, different from the item levels, cannot be changed, and only luck can give you an item with nice options. The levels are +4,+8,+12+15 Example: Bill of Balrog +4+8, Elven bow +0+12
  • Weapons: Increased damage. Each + mean the exact ammount of damage added to the attack.
  • Armor: Increased defense. Just like weapons, but defense instead of damage.
  • Shields: Increas defense rate. The higher the defense rate, the easier to dodge attacks.
Excelent Items (stated below) have special options, much more powerful than regular options, and sometimes special attributes, like reflect damage or increase the HP limit. Excelent Items - Having a +11+15 item is not the best you can have. Very special and rare items, called Excelent, can give an extra and powerful boost to your items. An excelent item will glow the colors of a rainbow. An excelent item will have additional properties (more defense or more damage), may have a special option, and with some luck they can deal 110% your normal damage on some attacks. An excelent item can have different levels just as a normal item. Example: Excelent Elven Bow. The options for excellent weapons are:
  • Excellent damage rate +10%
  • Increase wizardry dmg +level/20
  • Increase wizardry dmg +2%
  • Increase attacking wizardry speed +7
  • Increase life after monster + life/8
  • Increase mana after monster + mana/8
and for excellent armor & shields
  • Defense success rate +10%
  • Reflect damage +5%
  • Damage decrease +4%
  • Increase HP +4%
  • Increase mana +4%
  • Increase zen after hunt +40%
Luck - This is pure luck. If you have the real luck to find one, this item will be easier to upgrade using jewels and, again, with some luck, you can get a critical strike. A critical strike means you're hitting with the max damage you can do with that weapon. Critical strike works the same way as an Excelent Strike. Guardian Items - You can equip guardians to give a boost on battle. However they aren't cheap and they are disposable items. Everytime you are hit the guardian lose 1Hp, no matter the damage done to you. They have 255Hp when picked up. On the Korean server, the legendary character, Dark Lord, can have two pets that can be recovered and are used just like guardians.
  • Angel - Increases your max HP 50 poits. Absorbs 20% damage dealt.
  • Satan - Increases your attack in 30%. Takes out 3HP from you everytime you hit.
  • Uniria/Unicorn - This is amount. It increases your defense rate (you dodge attack more easily), and also makes you move hastly.
  • Dinorant - Created by chaos combination, the Diroant is an Uniria that can fly. It also increases defense rate and moves quickly, and also allows you to get into Icarus when you don't have your own wings.
Jewels - The tiems are the most expensive, rare and useful items on MU> There are 4 different jewels, each one with its use.
  • Jewel of Bless - Allows you to upgrade your items up to +6. It's chance of having sucess is 100%, so it's a certain hit.
  • Jewel of Soul - Allows you to upgrade your items up to +9. It can also upgrade +0 items, but unlike Bless, this jewel will work only 50% of the times. If the item has luck this chance increases to 75%. If it fails, however, item level may go back 1 level, certainly not wanted.
  • Jewel of Chaos - Let's you combine using the Chaos machine. It's the most common. Combining Chaos with Bless and Soul upgrades your items to +10 and +11, however if fails it will go back to +0, destroying all your hard work and sometimes also reducing the attached option (if it has). Can also be used like currency.
  • Jewel of Creation - Showed up recently on the Global Servers, combining the Jewel of Creation with chaos may create a fruit. This fruit, when eaten, will boost one of your stats. It's the most rare jewel.
