Mountain Meadows, Utah
Mountain Meadows
is an area in present-day
Washington County
Utah
. It is a place of rest and grazing used by migrants on the
Spanish Trail
on their way overland to
California
. It was there that the incident known as the
Mountain Meadows Massacre
happened in September 1857, when on the verge of the
Utah War
,
Mormon
settlers
and
Paiutes
ambushed and killed all but the young children of a migrant party traveling from
Arkansas
to
California
. In
1990
a memorial was dedicated there recognizing the victims of the incident.
