Mount Baxter is a peak along the crest of the Sierra Nevada in California, USA. Mount Baxter lies within the John Muir Wilderness, just north of Baxter Pass. A flock of protected bighorn sheep live in the vicinity of Mount Baxter. Because of this, access to Mount Baxter is limited to December 15 through July 1 of every year. Mount Baxter is to the northeast of the Rae Lakes, a popular backpacking destination along the John Muir Trail. Mount Baxter was probably named after John Baxter, a rancher in Owens Valley.
