Mortal Kombat 4

Mortal Kombat 4 was the last game in the Mortal Kombat series to have an arcade version. It was remade into Mortal Kombat Gold. MK Gold's story overrides MK4's.

New characters

MK4 introduces Jarek (the last Black Dragon), Kai (Shaolin monk and friend of Liu Kang), Tanya (Outworld warrior), Reiko (Shinnok's general, allegedly Shao Kahn in disguise), Fujin (God of Wind, ally of Rayden), Quan Chi (mysterious evil sorcerer), and Shinnok (imprisoned Elder God). Fujin, Quan Chi, and Shinnok technically first appeared in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, but this is the first game where they are playable characters. The game contains a hidden joke character: Meat, a skinless character who mimics other fighters' movesets. Mortal Kombat Gold also added Baraka, Noob Saibot, Kitana, Mileena, Sektor, and Kung Lao.

Returning characters

Goro, Jax, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Rayden, Reptile (noticeably de-evolved from Mortal Kombat Trilogy), Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero.

New to the series

  • MK4 is the first Mortal Kombat game to have entirely computer-generated characters, although the texture maps of the characters were taken from most of the live-action actors of the previous games. It was revolutionary at the time, although the character models now appear dated.
  • MK4 introduces a limited weapon system to the series.
  • MK4 also introduces three-dimensional combat, although limited to sidestepping as opposed to the 8 way walk movements in Soul Caliber.

Storyline

The amulet that the Elder Gods and Shinnok were fighting over in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero was a replica, and Quan Chi had the real one. Now, he has allied himself with Shinnok to wage war on the Heavens. With the help of an Edenian traitor, they enter the Heavens and kill most of the gods, but Fujin and Rayden escape and gather Earthrealm's finest warriors to fight them. The game follows Mortal Kombat Trilogy and comes before .
