Moore County, North Carolina Moore County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 74,769. Its county seat is Carthage6. History The county was formed in 1784 from Cumberland County. It was named for Alfred Moore, an officer in the American Revolutionary War and associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1907 parts of Moore County and Chatham County were combined to form Lee County. Law and government Moore County is a member of the regional Triangle J Council of Governments. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,828 km² (706 mi²). 1,807 km² (698 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.13% water. Townships The county is divided into ten townships, which are both numbered and named: 1 (Carthage), 2 (Bensalem), 3 (Sheffields), 4 (Ritter), 5 (Deep River), 6 (Greenwood), 7 (McNeill), 8 (Sandhill), 9 (Mineral Springs), and 10 (Little River). Adjacent Counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 74,769 people, 30,713 households, and 21,959 families residing in the county. The population density is 41/km² (107/mi²). There are 35,151 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (50/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.25% White, 15.50% Black or African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.20% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 3.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 30,713 households out of which 26.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.81. In the county the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 21.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $41,240, and the median income for a family is $48,492. Males have a median income of $31,260 versus $23,526 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,377. 11.40% of the population and 8.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.60% of those under the age of 18 and 10.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Cities and towns External links
