Monroe, North Carolina

Monroe is a city located in Union County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,228. It is the county seat of Union County.

Geography

Monroe is located at 34°59'20" North, 80°32'59" West (34.988760, -80.549792). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 64.4 km² (24.9 mi²). 63.6 km² (24.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 26,228 people, 9,029 households, and 6,392 families residing in the city. The population density is 412.2/km² (1,067.5/mi²). There are 9,621 housing units at an average density of 151.2/km² (391.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 60.12% White, 27.78% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 9.37% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. 21.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 9,029 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 15.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.27. In the city the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 11.6% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 102.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $40,457, and the median income for a family is $44,953. Males have a median income of $30,265 versus $22,889 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,970. 17.2% of the population and 11.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.7% of those under the age of 18 and 12.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
