Monongalia County, West Virginia

Monongalia County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 81,866. Its county seat is Morgantown6.

History

The county takes its name from the Monongahela River which flows through the county. The name Monongalia is a misspelling of Monogahela by a clerk in the state capitol shortly after formation of the state.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 948 km² (366 mi²). 935 km² (361 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.29% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 81,866 people, 33,446 households, and 18,495 families residing in the county. The population density is 88/km² (227/mi²). There are 36,695 housing units at an average density of 39/km² (102/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.22% White, 3.38% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 2.45% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 33,446 households out of which 24.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.80% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.70% are non-families. 31.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.91. In the county, the population is spread out with 18.20% under the age of 18, 23.40% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 101.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,625, and the median income for a family is $43,628. Males have a median income of $33,113 versus $23,828 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,106. 22.80% of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.90% of those under the age of 18 and 8.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
