Monnow Bridge

Monnow Bridge is the only remaining mediaeval fortified river bridge in Great Britain with the gate tower standing on the bridge. Monmouth stands on two rivers, the Wye and the Monnow which have their confluence at the town. The Monnow Bridge, as its name sugests, stands over the River Monnow The bridge was built late in the 1200s. The gatehouse on Monnow Bridge called Monnow Gate, which gives it is remarkable and noteworthy appearance, was added to the bridge in the 14th century. In 1297, Edward I to provided a murage grant in favour of Monmouth to enable the people of Monmouth to build the mediaeval town walls and gates. The work was still incomplete in 1315, or it was in need of repair, since the authority of 1297 was renewed on June 11315.
