Mohonk Preserve And Mohonk Mountain House (Resort)Mohonk Preserve and Mohonk Mountain House are in an area of land 90 miles to the north of New York City, near New Paltz in the Shawangunk Ridge. Mohonk Preserve is the largest member and visitor-supported nature preserve in New York State. The Mohonk Preserve was the first land trust established to protect the northern Shawangunk Ridge, a section of the Appalachian Mountains. Through research, education, and land management, the Preserve carries out its mission to safeguard this land and to promote a wider understanding of the environment and its role in our lives. The original formation of the Mohonk Trust, which evolved into Mohonk Preserve, was led by guests of the Mohonk Mountain House and the Smiley family, founders and owners of the Mountain House. The Mohonk Mountain House, is a private resort owned since 1870 by the Smiley Family. This world famous resort and it's landmark victorian style hotel was named a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
