Mobile County, Alabama

Mobile County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of a tribe of Indians, the Maubila tribe (see Mobilian). As of 2000 its population was 399,843. Its county seat is Mobile.

History

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,258 km² (1,644 mi²). 3,194 km² (1,233 mi²) of it is land and 1,064 km² (411 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 25.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 399,843 people, 150,179 households, and 106,777 families residing in the county. The population density is 125/km² (324/mi²). There are 165,101 housing units at an average density of 52/km² (134/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.07% White, 33.38% Black or African American, 0.67% Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 150,179 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.50% are married couples living together, 17.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.90% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.13. In the county the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 91.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $33,710, and the median income for a family is $40,378. Males have a median income of $32,329 versus $21,986 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,178. 18.50% of the population and 15.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.20% of those under the age of 18 and 14.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
