Mitchell Brothers

The Mitchell brothers (James "Jim" Lowell Mitchell, born November 30, 1943, and Artie Jay Mitchell, December 12, 1945February 27, 1991) were active in the pornography and strip club business in San Francisco in the 1970s and 1980s. They owned the O'Farrell Theatre, a well-known porn movie theater and strip club. Writer and journalist Hunter S. Thompson was a friend of the brothers and a frequent visitor of the club; at one time he was even being paid as the club's "night manager". In 1972 the Mitchell brothers produced one of the first successful feature length pornographic movies, Behind the Green Door. In 1991, Jim drove to Artie's house and killed him; the motive remained unclear. He was sentenced to six years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and served three years. In 2001 their story was dramatized in the movie Rated X starring Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez.
