Minister Mentor

Minister Mentor is a cabinet position uniquely created by the Singapore government in 2004 as part of a major leadership reshuffle. The first Minister Mentor of Singapore is Lee Kuan Yew. The newly appointed Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, announced his father's new title together with the naming of his Cabinet on August 12 2004. The older Lee had previously served as Prime Minister (1959-1990) and Senior Minister (1990-2004). The creation of the position of Minister Mentor was intended as a way of keeping Lee Kuan Yew (born 1923) in the cabinet, after his successor, Goh Chok Tong, stepped down as Prime Minister in favour of Lee Hsien Loong and became the Senior Minister. The Minister Mentor's role is advisory and consultative. An analysis of Lee Kwan Yew's role as Singapore's Minister Mentor is avaliable at http://www.channelnewsasia.com/analysis/2004/0811_ministermentor.htm.
