Minas IthilMinas Ithil ("Tower of the Rising Moon" in Sindarin) was Gondor's watchtower in the east in parallel with Minas Anor in the west, in the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien. Minas Morgul ("Tower of Black Sorcery" in Sindarin) was the name used for the tower when it was in the hands of the forces of Sauron in the Third Age. Second Age After the destruction of Nmenor, Isildur and Anrion, the sons of Elendil, landed in Gondor. Isildur built Minas Ithil near the mountainous border of Mordor, while Anarion built Minas Anor. When Sauron returned after escaping Nmenor's destruction, he attacked the exiles of Nmenor, and his forces took Minas Ithil by storm. When the Last Alliance of Elves and Men defeated Sauron in the year 3429 of the Second Age, Minas Ithil was restored as a watchtower. Third Age In the year 1980 of the Third Age, the Nazgl returned to Mordor (after the defeat of the Witch-king of Angmar in the north of Middle-earth). The Ringwraiths laid siege to Minas Ithil shortly after their return, and they took the city for their master, Sauron (who was still hidden at the time). Minas Ithil was occupied by fell creatures, and it changed into a foul, evil place. As a result, it came to be called Minas Morgul. Following the events of The Lord of the Rings, Minas Morgul was destroyed as it had become too foul for human habitation. In time the city was rebuilt and Faramir, by then made prince by King Aragorn Elessar, and owyn lived there and Ithilien became known as a Princedom.
