Milsons Point Railway Station, SydneyThe original Milsons Point railway station was opened as the southern terminus of the North Shore line on 1 May 1893. The site was crowded as three tracks and two platforms were squeezed between rock cliffs and the edge of Sydney Harbour. Also on the site was the terminus of a cable tramway (opened 1886) and a ferry service to Circular Quay in central Sydney. Milsons Point station was so overcrowded that a third platform was added in 1920, but remained at this location (easily identified now by the presence of the entertainment centre called Luna Park) until the site was required in 1924 for the construction work for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1924 to 1932 there was no Milsons Point railway station. As part of the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a new Milsons Point station was built on the northern approach to the bridge and opened in 1932. The station was in two parts: two platforms each side of the roadway. The western platforms were connected to the North Shore line whereas the Eastern pair were used for a tramway service between central Sydney and the northern suburbs. The tramway was removed in 1958 and a roadway constructed. The western pair of platforms has continued in use as Milsons Point Station since 1932, and is the only "Milsons Point" known to most Sydneysiders. It is 4.4 km from Central. Services through this station have been electrified from their inception. It is now operated by CityRail.
