Milam is a census-designated place located in Sabine County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,329.

Geography

Milam is located at 31°27'13" North, 93°47'7" West (31.453492, -93.785384). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 86.5 km² (33.4 mi²). 85.1 km² (32.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.71% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,329 people, 608 households, and 424 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 15.6/km² (40.5/mi²). There are 1,010 housing units at an average density of 11.9/km² (30.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 90.90% White, 7.07% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 608 households out of which 17.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.8% are married couples living together, 4.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.64. In the CDP the population is spread out with 16.5% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 17.4% from 25 to 44, 33.3% from 45 to 64, and 28.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 54 years. For every 100 females there are 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.6 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $32,717, and the median income for a family is $38,077. Males have a median income of $27,159 versus $26,397 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $20,155. 10.8% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
