Mike Myers (Baseball Player)

Michael Stanley "Mike" Myers (born June 26, 1969 in Arlington Heights, Illinois) is a relief pitcher who plays for the Boston Red Sox since 2004. Originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the fourth round in 1990 out of Iowa State University, Myers has pitched in the Major League Baseball for the Florida Marlins (1995), Detroit Tigers (1995-97), Milwaukee Brewers (1998-99), Colorado Rockies (2000-2001), Arizona Diamondbacks (2002-2003) and Seattle Mariners (2004). Myers, a left-handed specialist with a submarine delivery, has appeared in more games (646) than any pitcher in the majors since 1996 (his first full major league season). In the same period he has pitched in at least 64 games, topping 70 appearances in six of eight seasons. With Detroit, he led twice the majors with 83 appearances in 1996 and, in 1997, in 88 games, two shy of the American League record. Between 1995 and 2003, Myers compiled a 12-20 record with 327 strikeouts, a 4.37 ERA, and 14 saves in 376 innings. He has held left-handed hitters to a .213 batting average (169-for-792) with 243 strikeouts (one every 3.3 at-bats), and opponents have hit just .241 (123-for-510) all-time with runners in scoring position, just .230 (56-for-243) with men in scoring position and two outs. On August 7, 2004, Myers was traded by Seattle to Boston. At this time, he was 4-1 with a 4.88 ERA in 50 relief appearances for the Mariners. Pitching in the American League for the first time since 1997, he is tied for sixth in the league in appearances and has not allowed a run his last five times out. He pitched for Boston in the Divisional and League Championships as the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series after swepping the St. Louis Cardinals in four games. Myers was signed by the Cardinals as a free agent after the 2004 season, and returned to Boston on March 29, 2005, in exchange for two minor league players.
